Every day, Counslr is on a mission to spark conversations, break down barriers, and foster a community of support around mental health. As Mental Health Awareness Month draws to a close, it's important to reflect on the progress we've made, the conversations we've started, and the steps we can take to continue supporting mental health year-round.

Mental Health Awareness Month: A Counslr Recap

May has been a month filled with insightful discussions, awareness campaigns, and community-building activities focused on mental health.

Let’s Text About It

Counslr recently sponsored its first-ever essay contest, Let’s Talk Text About It, which was designed to provide students at Counslr’s partner schools a platform to raise awareness and reduce the stigma around mental health. We asked students to share ideas that empower young people to ask for help and to prioritize their mental well-being. Many students across the country shared inspiring mental health stories, struggles, and ideas for fostering a supportive and understanding community. We applaud all of the students who participated, and we appreciate their insights and encourage them to continue this critical conversation. We’re looking forward to sharing excerpts from their essays throughout the coming weeks. For the moment, the 2024 inaugural class of Counslr Scholars can be found here.

Counslr Chats

This month we continued to spotlight powerful messages from Counslr Chats: Beyond the Game, a conversation between elite athletes that examines the competitive landscape of student athletics, today's unique pressures, and the importance of mental health for both athletic performance and for a fulfilled life. These dynamic videos of current and former athletes highlight the important idea that it’s okay to talk about mental health and reaching out for help is a sign of strength. Watch the full episode and individual cameos on Counslr’s YouTube channel.

Stick It To Stigma

To help spread awareness during Mental Health Awareness Month and beyond, Counslr is kicking off our “Stick It To Stigma” sticker campaign this week with all of our partner organizations. We’re sending QR-coded stickers to download the Counslr app, ensuring that prioritizing mental wellness is just a text away. We are committed to continually breaking down the barriers to mental health, one sticker and one text at a time.

Taking Action Year-Round

As we transition out of this month dedicated to increasing awareness about the vital role mental health plays in our overall health and well-being, it's essential that we propel the momentum forward. Here are some ways to continue prioritizing mental health, even as Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close:

  • Keep small problems small. Make it a habit to check in with yourself regularly and ask yourself: "How am I feeling?" "What are my stressors right now?" "Am I neglecting any self-care practices?" Early warning signs like increased irritability, trouble sleeping, or feeling overwhelmed by minor tasks can be addressed before they become bigger problems. By addressing these issues early on, you can prevent them from escalating. Counslr’s in-the-moment support is available to help address issues early and effectively.
  • Stay in touch. Strong social connections are a cornerstone of good mental health. They strengthen your resilience, improve your mood, and combat feelings of isolation. Maintain the connections and habits you’ve made this month. Whether it’s spending time with family, talking with friends, or texting a counselor, maintaining a solid support network is invaluable to your overall mental well-being.
  • Be informed. Educate yourself about mental health and advocate for those who may be struggling. The more we understand about mental health, the better equipped we are to support ourselves and others. Increased awareness reduces stigma, empowers you to help those who might be struggling, and ultimately creates a more supportive environment for everyone. Counslr’s latest articles and blogs offer tips to help you navigate challenging situations or lend support to those who need it. Beyond Counslr, there are many reliable resources available from reputable mental health organizations, government websites, and academic institutions.
  • Seek professional help. Mental health challenges are common, affecting millions of people. If you feel overwhelmed or are struggling, remember that seeking help is a courageous and proactive step towards wellness. There are many types of mental health professionals available, so find someone who feels like a good fit for you. Counslr’s counselors listen, empathize, share coping strategies, recommend resources, and make referrals when additional care may be beneficial.

Counslr is dedicated to making mental health a priority every day for everyone. As we wrap up this month of awareness, we will keep the conversation going and strive for a future where mental wellness is accessible to all 24/7/365.
