How Counslr Cares For Its People

To illustrate Counslr’s mission to prioritize mental health, we asked our Director of People Operations, Angela Delgado-Sycz, how Counslr cares for its most valuable resource: its people.

Counslr is an organization that values health and happiness and recognizes how mental health can greatly impact both. We believe quality mental health support should be readily available, easily accessible, and socially acceptable 24/7/365. We are on a mission to make that belief a reality.

Pursuing such a lofty vision requires an infrastructure that is rooted in holistic well-being.

Counslr has cultivated a workplace environment that nurtures and guides how we communicate, interact, work, and support one another. We are acutely aware of the ways in which we impact each other, both inside and outside of the workplace. Empathy is one of our core values.

“Counslr operates as a 100% fully remote organization in order for its people to live and work wherever it is most desirable and comfortable for their individual needs,” Delgado-Sycz explained. “With licensed counselors located across the country, board members and ambassadors who volunteer their time and experience, and employees who work in different time zones, flexibility and innovative connection are critical. By embracing technology and respecting nontraditional ways to work, Counslr has created a super productive, skilled, and dedicated community.”

The benefits of positioning Workplace Well-Being as an organizational priority stretch far beyond such finite metrics as productivity, morale, and retention. While we are very much aware of those metrics, we also look at a variety of other indicators as signs of health and happiness, like workplace referrals, employee volunteerism, and collaborations.

Additionally, we have put organizational practices and norms in place and continue to develop policies that support Workplace Well-Being. One such policy directed towards the mental health of the workforce is the mandate that each employee take mental health days each quarter, intended “disengagement” and “unplugging” during which employees are encouraged to let go of stresses and concerns in order to relax their minds.

Counslr also offers a flexible Paid Time Off program, which encourages spending time away from work and screens in order to do other activities that may be a necessity in life—or that may simply bring enjoyment. From traveling, to volunteering, to rock climbing, or to creating music, our workforce appreciates the flexibility and the opportunity to engage in their various creative pursuits and special interests. We are happy they use the benefit to the fullest.

Work can create stress, especially in the demanding field of mental health. We intimately understand that the ways in which we work and communicate with employees and co-workers can affect others in profound ways. With a caring and supportive attitude that completely squashes the “24/7 expectation” often found in work environments that do not prioritize well-being, our workforce is able to get their work done effectively, efficiently, and—importantly—guilt-free!

How is it possible to have such a culture? The answer is in the DNA of the organization. At Counslr, our leadership understands the vast impact of workplace culture on employee mental and physical well-being and assumes the responsibility of nurturing and demonstrating a positive culture within the organization. CEO Josh Liss notes: “Though Counslr has always had a forward-thinking stance on workforce well-being, we've taken a constructive and proactive approach, building upon the 2022 ‘Surgeon General’s Framework for Workplace Mental Health and Well-Being’ and striving to continually provide a safe and secure work environment that allows our people to thrive both professionally and personally. In addition to traditional benefits such as a flexible monthly health stipend and a 401(k) matching program, Counslr also offers its employees an annual professional development budget to encourage and facilitate personal growth opportunities.”

Liss continues: “But all things considered, it’s less about what we provide in terms of benefits and more about the why. Our mission at Counslr is to better reach and support the traditionally unreachable people within organizations of all shapes and sizes. One of our founding beliefs at Counslr is that supported people provide better support. This applies to our counselors, but it also applies to our corporate team. Simply put, people do their best work when they feel supported and appreciated.”

It is our desire to provide a healthy work environment so the positive experiences may carry over to other aspects of the day. Leadership, employees, board members, partners, and collaborators not only share our values—they also practice those values every day.

Delgado-Sycz concludes: “As an organization that is incredibly diverse in experience, background, age, and ethnicity, the Counslr community is truly a heterogeneous workforce. However, while we celebrate our differences, we embrace our shared thoughts of core values and mission: to destigmatize mental health and prioritize mental wellness, not only for our partners and end users, but within our own workplaces and homes. At Counslr, we ‘walk the talk’ every day, 24/7/365.”
